DigitalBlast has completed the prototype of the small life science experiment device “AMAZ Alpha” for the deployment of cell culture experiment services on the ISS. The prototype is scheduled to be exhibited at various academic conferences and exhibitions both domestically and internationally!

DigitalBlast Co., Ltd., a company supporting the revitalization of the space industry and the creation of new businesses in the space sector (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Shingo Horiguchi, hereinafter referred to as DigitalBlast), is pleased to announce the completion of the prototype of the small life science experiment device “AMAZ Alpha,” specialized for cell experiments on the International Space Station (ISS). The completed prototype will be exhibited for the first time at the 34th ISTS International Space Exhibition held in Kurume City, Fukuoka, from Saturday, June 3, to Wednesday, June 7, 2023.

The small life science experiment device “AMAZ Alpha,” part of the “NOAH” project aimed at constructing a lunar ecological cycle maintenance system, is a device specialized for cell culture experiments in microgravity environments. Designed with user-friendliness in mind, it allows astronauts conducting space experiments to easily attach and detach cartridges, including sample containers and fluid delivery systems, with one hand, even in the limited space of the ISS, and the operation method is easy to understand. The basic design of the “AMAZ” small life science experiment device, which is primarily intended for plant physiology research as the first step of the “NOAH” project, remains the same, with the functionality and size of the sample containers necessary for cell culture experiments.

In the next step, we will proceed with the examination, development, and research to realize functions such as automatic delivery of culture medium and reagents for cell culture within the device, as well as built-in cell observation functions. Please look forward to future developments.

DigitalBlast will be exhibiting at the “34th ISTS International Space Exhibition” held in Kurume City, Fukuoka from Saturday, June 3, 2023, to Wednesday, June 7, 2023. This will be the first exhibition of the AMAZ Alpha prototype, and you will be able to see the device in operation.

In addition, at our booth, we will introduce DigitalBlast’s initiatives, including AMAZ Alpha, planned space experiments for moss cultivation and beer yeast culture aiming for installation and operation on the ISS in 2024, and the “Civilian Space Station (CSS) Concept” which plans the construction of a space station led by the private sector.

About the small life science experimental device AMAZ Alpha

This device is a small space experimental device for cell experiments, designed with the usability-focused philosophy of AMAZ. Like AMAZ, it can replicate various gravitational environments by changing the rotation speed, in addition to the moon’s one-sixth gravity of Earth, allowing for simultaneous comparison. Through cultivation under diverse gravity conditions, it will collect fundamental data on cellular responses to gravity.

In previous space experiments for cell culture, operations and tasks by astronauts, such as medium exchange, were required. This device will reduce the workload of astronauts by equipping an automatic liquid dispensing function for medium and reagents. Additionally, it is planned to incorporate an optical observation device for cell observation. With the built-in optical observation device, it will be possible to observe changes in cells under experimental conditions.

Research and development of this device are underway, aiming for a launch to the ISS around 2025. The developed device will be provided as an experimental environment for private companies and research institutions.
